Outdoor Preschool

Hilltop Nature School is an early childhood education program rooted entirely in the outdoors. Our approach is child-led, with an emergent curriculum inspired by curiosity, exploration, and a deep connection to nature. Through hands-on experiences, children are encouraged to take risks, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning—all under the gentle and nurturing guidance of our teachers.

At Hilltop Nature School, we focus on the growth and development of the whole child, fostering a sense of wonder through play and discovery. Our program nurtures independence, resilience, and confidence while cultivating a strong sense of self, community, and connection to the natural world. These foundational experiences support children in becoming compassionate, curious, and capable lifelong learners.

Our nature-based preschool serves children ages 2.5 - 5 years old, providing them with a rich and meaningful outdoor learning experience.

Where Little Feet Explore Big Adventures

LOCATION

Hilltop Nature School is located at Hilltop Guest Ranch a private 360-acre ranch in the breathtaking Sta. Rita Hills of the Santa Ynez Valley. Our outdoor classroom is nestled among rolling hills, old growth cottonwood trees, and wide-open meadows, creating the perfect environment for exploration, discovery, and deep connection with nature.

The ranch is home to the Osborne family and a vibrant community of animals, including dogs, chickens, goats, cows, pigs, and horses, offering children hands-on experiences in animal care and farm life. A gentle river and tranquil pond provide opportunities for water play, wildlife observation, and seasonal exploration, while the vast landscape invites climbing, fort-building, and endless outdoor adventures.

With 360 degrees of natural beauty, children at Hilltop Outdoor Preschool develop a profound appreciation for the land, learning through play, curiosity, and hands-on experiences. The ever-changing rhythms of the ranch—guided by the sun, wind, and wildlife—serve as a living classroom, fostering resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love for the outdoors.
